THE INTRIGUING DIALECTS OF ARABIC

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

Learning a language is important but to learn a language we must study the history and the origin of the language. For today’s topic we focus on Arabic and its Dialects. Arabic is the 5th most spoken language in the world as of today, which is why we have offered Arabic as one of our courses.

Arabic is one of widespread spoken languages among Arab individuals especially in the Middle East and North Africa where it is a considered the central language. Arabic language is different from other languages as it has a system of its own which consists of 28 letters, 25 of them being consonant letters and 3 vowels (Arab Academy, 2019). What differentiates the language the most is that it is written and read from right to left, whereas other languages are written and read from left to right. Every region has its own colloquial variation and can have a long pronunciation as well as a short pronunciation.

Here are the top dialects that sprout elegance in their own unique way :

Egyptian: Most widely understood dialect due to the thriving Egyptian television and movie industry which in turn had a high influence in the region for much of the 20th century. C2C Academy firmly believes that the Egyptian Dialect is the most important as it is spoken by more than 50 million Arabs in the world (Bilingua, 2019). We also feel that Egypt is one of the best locations to understand and learn the Arabic Language and its culture.

Levantine: A set of dialects that differ somewhat in pronunciation and intonation, but are largely equivalent in written form closely related to Aramaic.

Gulf: Folk wisdom holds that Gulf is the closest of the regional dialect to MSA (modern standard Arabic) perhaps because the current form of MSA evolved from an Arabic variety originating in the Gulf region. While there are major differences between Gulf and MSA, Gulf has notably preserved more of MSA’s verb conjugation than other varieties have (Arab Academy, 2019). C2C Academy focuses on the Gulf Dialect of Arabic as this is a collection of many dialects including the Khaliji and Iraqi Dialect that are spoken in Kuwait and Iraq respectively.

Maghrebi: Heavily influenced by the French and Berber languages. The Western-most varieties could be unintelligible by speakers from other regions in the Middle East, especially in spoken form. The Maghreb is a large region with more variation than is seen in other regions such as the Levant and the Gulf, and could be subdivided further (Bilingua, 2019). Also believed to be an important dialect by C2C Academy as this dialect is spoken by more than 70 million people, its most famous is countries like Morocco, Tunisia,

Yemeni: As a language institution we feel its important to talk about Yemen when mentioning Arabic as this dialect has managed to stay in the Yemeni region. It considered to be one of the oldest and strongest form of Arabic Dialect and is difficult to learn than other dialects.

With the growing importance of the Arabic language comes quite a few benefits such as the increasing demand for Arabic speaking workers in the western world, Business opportunities in Arabic speaking countries and scholarship for Arabic studies (ImportanceofLanguages.com, 2019). C2C Academy understands this well and thus assure you that we are your best choice for learning this exotic Language. We hope to see you soon!
