Idioms, A powerful source of Language Learning

Talking to your Norwegian friend and she says 'stop walking around hot porridge'. Are you a little confused as to what she meant?



She wants you to get straight to the point. Phrases like these are called Idioms. Idioms possess greater meaning than what it might suggest. They are of immense significance as they enable the speaker to express thoughts and feelings effectively. Every language possesses its own range of idioms which are distinctive to that language only. If you are on your road to learning a new language, you might want to consider learning about the culture as well. Idioms are deeply rooted in one's culture. In-order to study culture, Idioms is where you start.


Here are some reasons why idioms are going to help you with your journey of language learning:

  • Idioms enable you to sum up various sentences in just one phrase.

  • They help you get closer to the culture of that language.

  • It will ease your perceived culture shock.

  • When you speak idioms they make you funnier and less boring to listen to.

  • It helps you to become more like the natives. So if you want to fit in, you should definitely start using them!

  • You can be more confident in the language you want to learn.

  • You can become better at conversations and thus make more friends.

  • You begin to think in the target language which will boost your language speaking capability
